Asian street food meets the vibrancy of Centre Street. At Flame Mountain BBQ, they have learned how to capture the tastes, smells, and feelings associated with Asian food culture. Only being open now for three months, you’ll find this place located next to Gord’s Running Room and K-Town Fried Chicken. Entering the restaurant, you instantly feel the culture they are expressing. The walls are covered with beautiful murals, each telling their own story, and hanging lanterns add to the intimate nature of the place.
Flame Mountain BBQ, in my opinion, is doing everything right. Their service goes above and beyond, as each server we encountered was friendly, excited about their restaurant, and consistently willing to offer suggestions, recommendations, and personal favourites. They have a good selection of drinks, both alcoholic and non. As for the food, we ate a lot of it. Wanting to try as much of the menu as possible, we ordered in rounds, different items from varying sections of the menu. We started with a simple cucumber salad and nuts, followed by numerous skewers of meat and vegetables, and seafood options. The portions sizes were adequate, prices great, and the flavours were strong, as each item had it’s own unique taste. Taking traditional vegetables, there were several that they put their own twist on. The one that particularly stood out for me was the chives. Typically, we use them to chop as a garnish, yet they grilled them as a whole. Another item that I thoroughly enjoyed were the scallops. They were huge, flavourful, and cooked to perfection. Although I can’t simply choose one item, my personal favourites would have to be the pork belly, shorts ribs, and their buns served with condensed milk.
Throughout our evening here, we were lucky enough to meet part-owner Stephen. I’m not sure that I have ever met someone who exudes as much passion as he did. It was really refreshing. He talked with us about it being a family-run business and the vision for the place. Without a doubt, he loves what he’s doing and is passionate about the food, service, and atmosphere that his restaurant creates.
Flame Mountain BBQ is a must visit! Add it to your list and enjoy tasting this phenomenal Asian street food.
